Future Cable Requirements of Major Telecom Carriers

This report discusses telecom fibre deployments, carrier capex, and broadband access developments.  The conclusions show how much the telecom industry’s fibre demand will be driven by FTTx projects and multimedia revenue opportunities.  In 2007, FTTx applications consumed 43 million km of cabled fibre – half the amount installed for terrestrial telecom applications and 38% of all single-mode applications, including telecom, CATV, private network, and other non-telecom applications. In 2013, FTTx applications will use 72 million km of cabled fibre, which will be 43% of all single-mode applications.

Future Cable Requirements of Major Telecom Carriers

In the past three years, Verizon, NTT East, and NTT West have installed a combined total of more than 35 million km of cabled single-mode fibre.  These companies have established themselves as the world leaders in FTTH.  But the 2007 cable data suggests that their years of peak demand are already behind us, and although they will contribute to strong near-term demand, they will not contribute to strong growth.  Within five years, Verizon will have passed the majority of its customers, and the NTT companies already have passed a very high percentage. The report will explain what this means for worldwide fibre demand by carrier.
