Copper Wire, Cable and Wirerod Monitor
Nov 2008 Issue
Cable Market Holds up in Q3 Despite Economic Worries
  • Our initial estimates for the first three quarters of 2008 show that global copper wire and cable production increased by 1.4% year-on-year, although with little official data for September available it is possible that the true picture is slightly worse than this as the impact of the credit crunch intensified towards the end of the quarter. The falling price of copper and deteriorating economic outlook is now causing many customers to run down stocks and delay orders and so Q4 is looking increasingly weak.
  • Q3 has turned out reasonably well in comparison to the weak Q3 in 2007, with year-on-year copper cable production growth of 2.1%. The North American and North East Asian markets remain weakest, although their position did not deteriorate any further in Q3. The European market has slowed and is now showing almost no growth in the first nine months. Thus all the global growth is coming from the developing Rest of the World.
  • For global copper wire and cable production to show negative growth in 2008 Q4 production would have to fall by at least 4.3% year-on-year and 6.5% compared to Q3. Whilst the rapidly deteriorating economic outlook and falling copper price means this is possible, we believe that there is a good chance that the year can still end in positive territory.
