Recent trends: Coal prices explode

2008 has seen metallurgical coal prices surge to record highs amid a chronic supply crunch. Contract prices for Australian hard coals rocketed, while semi-soft and PCI coal benchmarks have spiralled. The spectacular gains were triggered by massive disruptions to supply early in the year thanks to acombination of flooding, snow, power cuts and logistical bottlenecks.
