Caution prevails
  • The strong recovery in nickel prices which took place in the first half of 2010 has suffered a setback. Uncertainty over prospects for the global economy, prompted by sovereign debt issues in Europe and fears over whether the Chinese government can successfully achieve a measured cooling of its economy, led to several cross-commodity sell-offs, pushing LME nickel prices down from over $12.25/lb ($27,000/t) in mid-April to below $8.16/lb ($18,000/t) in early June. Since then, prices have increased marginally, with the cash quote fluctuating within a trading range of $8.50-9.07/lb ($18,750-20,000/t) for the last month.
