Executive summary

Recent trends (I): 2009 - a tough year for steel

  • The global economic downturn led to a sharp contraction in steel demand across most of the world during 2009 with steel prices falling and production levels cut back sharply. Overall, total global crude steel production was down by 9% y-o-y. Steel prices too fell in most regions: US hot rolled coil prices, for example, averaged $531/tonne in 2009, compared with $946 the year before.

Metallics Market Outlook

The Metallics Market Service is the essential service from CRU which provides the most timely and extensive coverage of the markets for scrap, pig iron and HBI/DRI. The main report is published every February, and is supplemented by quarterly updates in April, July, and October.

With melt rates on a tight leash across most regions, metallics markets and prices remained subdued through 2009. However, China, previously a minor player in the international market, emerged as a powerhouse in the post-crash world, supplanting Turkey as the world’s largest scrap importer over the first half of the year.

Moving into 2010, will China remain a force in the market going forward, and will the return of demand in the more developed markets signal a new price rally?

The service addresses these issues as well as helping to provide answers to the following questions:
> How will the market develop over 2010 and beyond?
> Which regions are likely to emerge as major new players in the metallics market?
> Where will major supply growth emerge in the coming years?
> Where will Turkey source its future metallics supply?

Discover how the answers to all these questions will affect your business.
