A brighter outlook over 2010 and beyond

Strengthening global demand underpins price recovery

World steel production has turned the corner. Output has risen for the past six consecutive months thanks to a significant recovery in developed regions and continued growth in China. Global output was down by 8.1% in 2009 according to the World Steel Association. In the Western World, the recovery in output has proceeded in line with expectations whereas in China steel output has performed much more strongly than anticipated. However demand remains relatively weak and, in many cases, increased steel production has not been matched by a similar trend in demand. Consequently, steel prices retreated towards the end of 2009.
