Iron Ore Market Service
2009 December issue
Tighter and tighter

Having shrugged off the worst effects of the economic crisis thanks to roaring Chinese demand, the iron ore market has, as expected, seen further tightening over the past quarter. Spot prices have moved up for the fourth consecutive quarter. In part this is due to a tighter ore market but also because freight rates have risen.

The run-up in prices is again a function of strong Chinese demand. Ore imports in China are on course to exceed 620m tonnes this year which would mark a huge 40% increase on the year before. This means that the rise in Chinese import demand this year will exceed the combined growth over the previous three years.
