The cobalt industry is unusually complex in many respects. The supply base consists of several groups of producers with different business models and economic drivers, including a significant volume of by-product producers. A significant proportion of supply (currently around 45%) is sourced from a single country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has a history of political instability and civil war. China is a major importer of cobalt from the DRC, buying concentrates and intermediate chemicals for further refining in China. This key relationship is developing and is an important aspect of the cobalt industry going forward.
