At present, macroeconomic PMIs are used throughout industry to help policy makers and market participants better understand where the economy and industry is heading, at what speed and why. The CRU/Markit Metal PMIs use the same data as the macro PMI, but we refined the sample of managers responding to only those participating in the Steel, Aluminium and Copper industries.

By consolidating reported activity at the level of individual companies, our PMIs give you the most accurate picture possible of Flat Steel supply dynamics. With information derived from various points along the supply chain, the PMIs have the proven ability to lead the market by up to 12 months with consistent 90% correlations.

How do we produce the CRU/Markit Steel PMI?

CRU has teamed up with Markit Economics, the producer of Purchasing Managers’ Indices for Manufacturing, the Service sector and Construction.

For the CRU/Markit Steel PMI, Markit Economics conducts a regular pan-European monthly survey of purchasing managers within the vehicle manufacturing, construction materials, electrical goods manufacturing and machinery & equipment manufacturing sectors.

Purchasing managers are asked whether the level of the given indicator, eg new orders, is higher, lower or the same as one month ago. The results are converted to an easy-to-read index, identical to the popularized Manufacturing, Service and Construction PMIs.

CRU provides added-value analysis by leveraging its 40 years’ of experience as consultants to the global metals and mining industry.
