Steel Sheet Product Monitor
2010 March issue
Raw materials costs power sheet price upswing
  • In response to escalating raw materials prices, sheet prices have risen in all major markets, and in some cases, quite strongly. The CRUspi index for steel sheet has gained 9% as a result.

Demand conditions supportive - for now

  • Market supply/demand conditions are currently supportive of mills’ efforts to push through price rises, though we doubt the sustainability of demand strength in a number of countries.

Steel Sheet Products Monitor

How will I benefit from a subscription to Steel Sheet Products Monitor?

Steel Sheet Products Monitor analyses global markets and prices for hot rolled, cold rolled and galvanised sheet products by region.  Detailed global estimates of production, consumption and trade balances are analysed by product and region.

In-depth commentary on current prices, market trends and news by region for hot rolled, cold rolled, coated sheet and merchant slab.  A comprehensive monthly summary of industry news.

CRU is pleased to announce that it had increased the frequency of its assessments of both hot-rolled coil and cold-rolled coil prices in the US Midwest.  From March 2009, assessments will be published each calendar week.  All assessments will be available to subscribers of the CRU Steel Sheet Products Monitor in either the Monitor itself or in the Prices Supplements that we disseminate.

In the final Prices Supplement of the month CRU will also publish the "monthly average price" for each product (calculated from all assessments published during the month).

For cold-rolled coil, this increase in frequency accompanies the graduation of our assessments to an enhanced set of data collection procedures from March 4th.  You will recall that the our assessments of hot-rolled coil prices in the US Midwest graduated to the enhanced set of data collection procedures in September 2008.  These enhanced procedures are designed to maintain the robustness of our price assessments in the face of the dramatic - and continued - increase in their use, while leaving the methodology unchanged from that currently employed.

As was the case for hot-rolled coil, the graduation of CRU's assessments of cold-rolled coil prices in the US Midwest comes following extensive discussions with market participants and also the successful completion of an extensive, "implementation stage".  During this period, our assessments were calculated using both sets of data collection procedures, and the results compared.  There was no significant statistical difference between these assessments and a correlation of . 958  was achieved.
