Switch to surplus

Having broken below $2,000/t for the first time at the end of May (just after our last Quarterly), the price has bobbed around in a wide range. The LME 3-months lead price has traded from highs above $2,200/t to lows towards $1,500/t. Although fund activity continues to drive the price moves, their action is merely exaggerating a reflective pause in the market. Having tumbled so dramatically from last October’s highs of near-$4,000/t, the market is now looking for fresh signals to provide price direction.
