Spot market softens as annual talks get underway

Spot terms for concentrates have risen sharply over the last month, strengthening the smelters’ negotiating position in the talks over next year’s long term contract TC/RCs. The Japanese and Korean smelters are meeting for the second round of talks with Escondida this week, and with Freeport next week. Meetings with the Indian smelters will be held later in the month. The negotiations will take place against a back drop of higher spot market terms, weakening demand for refined copper, a sharp decline in smelter by- product revenues, and the announced reduction in availability from Escondida.
