Copper Monitor
2009 January Issue
Market, what market?
  • The spot copper market continues to see extremely thin volumes, and has effectively seized up in the face of the spreading financial and economic meltdown.

  • With central banks slashing interest rates to all-time lows, the policy response has now shifted firmly towards fiscal stimulus.  This will take months to eventually boost copper demand, making short term prospects for cathode consumption grim indeed.

  • Multi-metal mines have been the first to cutback production, as by and co-product prices have fallen by similar percentages to copper.  However, with copper prices trading below $3,000/t copper-led operations will now come under pressure.

  • With year end book squaring, thin trading conditions, de-stocking and a poor demand picture, copper prices will remain under downward pressure.
